Summary

9 hours, 20 minutes

The scorching new thriller from the number-one 'New York Times' best-selling author of 'The Girl on the Train'

When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him。 Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home。 Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member。 And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police。 Three women with separate connections to the victim。 Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment。 Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them。 When it comes to revenge, even good people might be capable of terrible deeds。 How far might any one of them go to find peace? How long can secrets smolder before they explode into flame?

The book had a lot of characters so it was confusing at times but as long as you paid attention it was great! I felt this was more of a suspenseful book and not really a thriller。 Thank you @netgalley and @randomhousebooks for this arc in return for an honest review。 This book comes out tomorrow, August 31st! Just as the title indicated, this is a slow burn mystery。 The story is told in incredible details that help develop a deeply layered backstory。 While this seems overwhelming at the beginning, it all comes together in the end with an unraveling that just clicks in place perfectly。 For me, this one of Hawkins falls between The Girl on the Train (loved it) and Into the Water (wanted more from it。) A Slow Fire Burning falls between the fast pace of GOTT with the extra layers I had hoped for in ITW。 Just as the title indicated, this is a slow burn mystery。 The story is told in incredible details that help develop a deeply layered backstory。 While this seems overwhelming at the beginning, it all comes together in the end with an unraveling that just clicks in place perfectly。 For me, this one of Hawkins falls between The Girl on the Train (loved it) and Into the Water (wanted more from it。) A Slow Fire Burning falls between the fast pace of GOTT with the extra layers I had hoped for in ITW。 I do recommend reading the book description as you get started because it will help you understand the 3 main women's roles and eliminate confusion as you get to know the characters。 The audiobook is performed very well! A complex interwoven story about family and the long slow impact of loss。 Full of detailed living breathing characters in a very real London。 I love that the inner stories of the characters are exposed and are almost perpendicular to the exterior face that they present the world。 The focus of the story is not the murder but rather the death of Carlo and Theo’s first child from which everything flows。 The characters are great but all are tinged with regret and bitterness and sometimes desperation A complex interwoven story about family and the long slow impact of loss。 Full of detailed living breathing characters in a very real London。 I love that the inner stories of the characters are exposed and are almost perpendicular to the exterior face that they present the world。 The focus of the story is not the murder but rather the death of Carlo and Theo’s first child from which everything flows。 The characters are great but all are tinged with regret and bitterness and sometimes desperation。 We see the impact of poverty and of success, of addiction and jealousy。 It also is fantastic in that it has a real range of ages for the point of view characters – we have twenty something Laura, fifty something Miriam and the elderly Irene – and each has something interesting to say and it’s not always comfortable。 It’s set in a booklover’s world – Miriam works in a bookshop, Theo is a novelist and Irene is a voracious reader – even the victim is writing a graphic novel。 It’s a pacey read with several threads and timelines which all add up to a satisfying whole – it would make an excellent BBC Sunday night drama。 。。。more

A SLOW FIRE BURNING I believe it was…A slow fire burning is exactly how it reads。 This book has multiple povs including a book within a book。 I think this book will appeal to readers with patience who want a show and are willing to sit still for a bit。 It’s slow and meticulous and more crafty than thrilling。 If you liked THE DEATH OF MRS WESTAWAY (Ruth Ware), THE HUNTING PARTY (Lucy Foley), or anything by Ottessa Moshfegh, you will probably enjoy this one。 It could be that it’s a bit gothic。 Her A SLOW FIRE BURNING I believe it was…A slow fire burning is exactly how it reads。 This book has multiple povs including a book within a book。 I think this book will appeal to readers with patience who want a show and are willing to sit still for a bit。 It’s slow and meticulous and more crafty than thrilling。 If you liked THE DEATH OF MRS WESTAWAY (Ruth Ware), THE HUNTING PARTY (Lucy Foley), or anything by Ottessa Moshfegh, you will probably enjoy this one。 It could be that it’s a bit gothic。 Her writing created a strange unnerving, oil in your belly, ungrounded atmosphere。 I wouldn’t call it atmospheric, more encompassing。If you allow it。The creep factor in this thriller is off the chain。 Hawkins sentences are written so that you’re often reading through your hands。 🙈🙊🙉Something like this。 And then she drops a three word phrase that twists the way you’ll look at your nephews smile the next time you see him。 That is a craft! And I am a fan!!Hawkins writing expertise I think is also in her ability to exsanguinate (yes I’m using that word) her characters。 To turn them page by page into these sad, twisted, deplorable characters that are off-putting, emaciated and pekid, yet somehow endearing。 I hate her characters, all of them。 Yet, I covet them like sad ghosts in the cemetery of my reading life。 Rachel, from THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN will forever be one of my favorite unreliable narrators。 Details about her storyline make her character flawed, and absurdly frustrating as a reader, yet I yearned for her to have some kind of clarity。 I yearned for her to wake up。 In this book Laura is the character that will haunt me。 Her story is sad and miserable and so dysfunctional。 I wanted to hug her and I wanted to scream at her。 I hate her and I will probably never forget her。 As far as format, Rosamund Pike narrates this audiobook。 I am such a huge fan of her acting and whenever I get the opportunity to listen to her narrate a book, I jump at it。 Her vocal talents were on display during this book as she expertly handled each and every POV。 Giving breadth and depth to each character。 Always a delight to listen to her。 I might bump this rating up later, but for now。。4 starsA solid, crafty, slow burn of a thriller。 With characters that will haunt you as was intended。 Thanks to @riverheadbooks @librofm for the advanced copy! 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley, Riverhead Books and Ms。 Hawkins for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book。 An honest review was requested but not required。 To be completely honest I have not read Ms。 Hawkins's first "big name" book (Girl on the Train) nor have I read Into the Water。 Many of the psychological thrillers of that time period sort of run together for me。 But I know many readers at work who are rabid about Ms。 Hawkins' books and I was greatly looking forward to seeing if she lived up to Thank you to NetGalley, Riverhead Books and Ms。 Hawkins for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book。 An honest review was requested but not required。 To be completely honest I have not read Ms。 Hawkins's first "big name" book (Girl on the Train) nor have I read Into the Water。 Many of the psychological thrillers of that time period sort of run together for me。 But I know many readers at work who are rabid about Ms。 Hawkins' books and I was greatly looking forward to seeing if she lived up to her hype。I'm pleased to report that this book kept me absolutely gripped from page one。 As with Gone Girl (different author, I know, but bear with me) every single character in the book falls squarely on the "unlikeable spectrum。" However, unlike Gone Girl, every character has something going for them - a personality element, a backstory, etc。, that fosters empathy。 Honestly, this book was as much a tragedy as it was a suspense/thriller/mystery。 I really felt sorry for every character in the story, and sad。 The description of the death of Ben, Carla and Theo's son, is described well enough that it stuck in my imagination for days; this definitely might be a trigger for some。 There is also a briefly described (but evocative and horrific nonetheless) description of the killing of a pet。 And yes, I do realize that this book in its essence a murder mystery, but the deaths of innocents - children, animals - hit differently, you know? I thought the writing was very well-paced and the characterizations well done。 The settings were sort of negligible but that's ok; the focus was definitely on the characters。 The story-within-a-story was also really creative and a nice touch for tying all the narratives together。 Overall I enjoyed this book - I tore through it at top speed! - and I can see it being a huge hit amongst readers in general and where I work, specifically。 I'm happy I got to read it now as I suspect it won't be sitting on shelves for quite some time。 。。。more

I think I definitely went into this one with too high of expectations because of how much I loved The Girl on the Train。 A Slow Fire Burning falls into the “good not great” category for me。 I was hoping for another fast-placed plot, but this one was more of a slow build (I mean it’s right there in the name I guess)。 Additionally, it’s a super character-driven book and I found I only liked one or two characters, so that was kinda tough for me。 Nonetheless I finished it in less than 24 hours so it I think I definitely went into this one with too high of expectations because of how much I loved The Girl on the Train。 A Slow Fire Burning falls into the “good not great” category for me。 I was hoping for another fast-placed plot, but this one was more of a slow build (I mean it’s right there in the name I guess)。 Additionally, it’s a super character-driven book and I found I only liked one or two characters, so that was kinda tough for me。 Nonetheless I finished it in less than 24 hours so it’s definitely well-written! 。。。more

This book is so absorbing, clever plot, intriguing characters and unexpected humour。 I love Paulas easy style of writing, the plot flows without having to think about it or try to work things out。 The characters are believable, I especially liked Laura’s no nonsense character and humorous outbursts, she’s a very true to life character。 The plot twists and turns and just when you think you’ve got it all worked out, it turns again。 Highly recommended, fans of Lisa Jewel will love this。

I actually really enjoyed this audiobook。 I know some people don’t care for the strange timeline, and the book within a book etc。, but I liked it。 I find stories like this so much fun。 I mean, the story was not fun, but trying to figure out what the heck was going on, and who on earth did what to whom, was quite entertaining。 This is definitely not a happy book。 Nor is it a book in which you will fall in love with the characters。 But it is fascinating to watch what can happen when you put a grou I actually really enjoyed this audiobook。 I know some people don’t care for the strange timeline, and the book within a book etc。, but I liked it。 I find stories like this so much fun。 I mean, the story was not fun, but trying to figure out what the heck was going on, and who on earth did what to whom, was quite entertaining。 This is definitely not a happy book。 Nor is it a book in which you will fall in love with the characters。 But it is fascinating to watch what can happen when you put a group of damaged people who don’t get help in close proximity。 This book is the epitome of the phrase “hurt people hurt people“。 Trying to figure out who the murderer was practically broke my brain。 Every 10 pages I thought I had it figured out… I didn’t。 And even when I did, I didn’t actually trust it。 And I loved how the author basically made fun of the book, and people who would critique the book, IN the book。 I see what you did there。 😂The audiobook narrator did a great job。 She had distinct voices for the different characters and didn’t get on my nerves。 Haha。 The tone actually almost reminded me of listening to one of my murder podcasts。 Definitely recommend。 Thanks to Penguin Random House audio for the review copy。 。。。more

In short: A young man, Daniel, is found murdered in his houseboat。 3 women, Laura, Carla and Miriam are being questioned and all have motives。 My thoughts: I went back & forth with this book。 Some books I like for the story they tell, others I like for the writing。 This was the later。 I started this book on audio with an ALC from @libro。fm While I enjoyed the narrator there was so much going on and so many characters introduced that I found it hard to follow。 Luckily my physical copy from @river In short: A young man, Daniel, is found murdered in his houseboat。 3 women, Laura, Carla and Miriam are being questioned and all have motives。 My thoughts: I went back & forth with this book。 Some books I like for the story they tell, others I like for the writing。 This was the later。 I started this book on audio with an ALC from @libro。fm While I enjoyed the narrator there was so much going on and so many characters introduced that I found it hard to follow。 Luckily my physical copy from @riverheadbooks arrived and I was able to stop listening and finish the book reading。 The characters in this book are not likable。 Writing their stories and how they all see each other was done really well。 The pacing was slow but served this story perfect as it helped build the feeling of anger, jealousy and resentment all while slowly revealing the connections everyone had。 There was so much else that happened in this book with the character backstories, a book within the book and solving it the whodunnit。 In short, it was one slow burning, twisty domestic thriller with standout writing。 。。。more

Hawkins has a way of bring her characters to life, their flaws as well that you find yourself invested in them。 (Irene I love Irene I could relate to her younger self on so many levels she just spoke to me) A compelling murder mystery based on revenge, deceit, jealousy, pain and trauma。

The only problem I had with this book was that there were SO MANY characters。 It was difficult to keep them all straight! I considered making a little list just so I wouldn’t have to keep rewinding to figure out what was going on。 The book really builds momentum as it goes, and there are plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing! The switching back and forth of characters helps to keep the story moving because you’re constantly getting distracted…and losing sight of impending danger。My favori The only problem I had with this book was that there were SO MANY characters。 It was difficult to keep them all straight! The narrative was choppy and not very intriguing。 Some characters were better established than others。(view spoiler)[I would have rated this three stars, but I am sick of reading mysteries/domestic thrillers that use incest as a plot device。 A Slow Fire Burning does not actually have incest, but there is an inappropriate relationship between an aunt and nephew that has sexual undertones。 It's not creative or edgy, and was not necessary for the overall plot。 (hide spoiler)] The narrative was choppy and not very intriguing。 Some characters were better established than others。(view spoiler)[I would have rated this three stars, but I am sick of reading mysteries/domestic thrillers that use incest as a plot device。 A Slow Fire Burning does not actually have incest, but there is an inappropriate relationship between an aunt and nephew that has sexual undertones。 It's not creative or edgy, and was not necessary for the overall plot。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more
